Middle School Cast Information
Please read the following information carefully.
Who: All interested students may participate in the musical. Aladdin Jr. is an energetic musical full of comedy, suspense, imagination, and outrageous magical characters who act, sing, tumble, perform magic and/or circus acts, and/or dance! There are several lead/supporting non-solo singing roles this year/characters who primarily act and only sing in two group numbers.
Grades 6-8 can choose how they will participate in the play. They may audition for lead and supporting roles, be involved in the dancing and/or choral ensembles, and/or participate on the crew (backstage, ushers, running spotlights, running crew, making props, etc.)
Several acting-only, dancing, and/or smaller choral ensemble roles require a smaller time commitment of 10 rehearsals plus our tech week and dress rehearsals (which take place during the school day), while the lead and supporting roles require a larger commitment of 20+ rehearsals. A few supporting roles this year have only 8 total rehearsals plus tech week/dress rehearsals.
ALL cast members must attend tech week and dress rehearsals.
Any Middle School student may participate on the crew- we have a show to organize and run with tons of tech work! The crew is required to attend tech week, dress rehearsals, and the shows. The crew may also help with auditions/callbacks and are welcome to participate in any other rehearsals during the week or on Sunday, but this is not mandatory. Come when you can for as long as you can.
*The student stage manager is asked to attend ALL rehearsals*.
What: For those students in grades 6 - 8 wishing to audition for lead or supporting roles, you will sign up for a 5-minute audition on November 1, 2023. All audition information details are located on the show blog at davisaladdin.blogspot.com.
Auditions are held in the LS Theatre.
You do not need to audition to participate in the ensemble or be on the crew.
You may audition with a friend and combine your two times.
However, if you wish to be considered for a lead or supporting speaking role and/or solo singing, you are strongly encouraged to sing individually. Please show any special skills during this solo audition.
Upon submission of your registration and activity fee to the business office, you can pick up scripts from Ms. Kendrick. Please note that we will release the script once you are fully registered and that at the time of registration, you will only know your specific role in the play if you want to participate as a member of the ensemble or crew.

We are looking for personality, volume, speech clarity, confidence, and actors who aren’t afraid to perform and move with great enthusiasm! Please show us your moves! We need dancers, jugglers, gymnasts, magicians, singers, and actors! PRACTICE YOUR AUDITION WELL BEFORE YOUR AUDITION! Have fun! Be big and bold!
AUDITION INFORMATION & WORKSHOP SESSIONS (optional)
OCTOBER 16 & 17 in the Theatre during conferences (this was emailed to all MS parents and students).
Monday, 10/23, and Monday, 10/30, from 7:25 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. in Ms. Kendrick’s Room.
Learn show songs, practice acting sides, and work on your characters and material from the show to prepare for auditions/callbacks. You may come for as long as you like!
AUDITIONS: Wednesday, November 1 Individual Auditions: 3:45 pm - 6:45 pm
Wednesday, November 8 Callbacks Round 1: 3:45 pm - 7:45 pm
Tuesday, November 14 Callbacks Round 2: 3:45 pm - 7:45 pm
Wednesday, November 15. Final Callback if needed: 3:45 pm – 7:30ish pm
Please arrive 10 minutes early to the audition to sign in with the stage manager.
Be prepared to stay up to 15 minutes past your audition time!
All Students are called back to Callback Round 1, part 1.
Students who are called back will not have to attend all days of callbacks unless otherwise asked.
WHERE: All auditions, callbacks, & rehearsals take place in the THEATRE AT THE LS.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT WILL I HAVE TO DO AT THE AUDITION?
Be on time.
Listen carefully and follow all directions.
When it is your turn, introduce yourself, tell us your name, what song you are singing, or what scene you are reading from/acting out.
Your November 1 audition must be under 4 minutes from start to finish (from when you say Hi to when you leave the stage/say thank you!).
For example, "Hi, my name is Kendrick Phillips, and I am singing Prince Ali from Aladdin.”
Once you introduce yourself, go straight into your song/scene(s).
When you finish, say "thank you.”
Make sure you follow directions and are willing to go for it and be the character!
For instance, if you’re asked to be louder, make sure you belt it out and say your words with gusto!
IS THERE ANY ACTIVITY FEE?
Yes. The School play is an after-school activity, and as the Davis sports teams require, there is an activity fee for cast and crew members. Each student receives and keeps the following materials: an official Aladdin JR. A script in a book form, mp3 guide vocals, & an official cast/crew t-shirt in addition to Sunday/show week snacks, a cast photo, and instruction, custom costumes from November-March.
The MS play activity fee is $225 per student.
WHEN WILL REHEARSALS TAKE PLACE?
Most rehearsals will occur twice a week on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Only some characters will be called at each rehearsal or for the entire duration of the rehearsal. Some characters attend once every two weeks, while lead characters attend most rehearsals.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CAST REHEARSALS
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5:45ish.
Regular weekly rehearsals will run from late November to mid-March.
Students ride the bus from the MS to the LS.
Some lead-character rehearsals will go longer as we get closer to the show. Leads are expected to attend the entire duration of their rehearsals.
Rehearsal times vary. November - January weekday rehearsals end around 5:30/5:45 ish. Early February weekday rehearsals around 6:15 -6:30 pm; mid-February to mid-March rehearsals end around 6:30/6:45 pm. Two weeks out from the show (this includes tech), finish around 7 pm/7:30 pm.
Two Thursdays occur for the MS Cast two weeks out from Tech rehearsal.
All cast members may only miss 2 Sunday rehearsals (unless you are a smaller part cleared by Ms. Kendrick, who is not needed at every Sunday rehearsal, or Ms. Kendrick and Mr. Frank clear you at the time of casting). Those missing more than 2 Sunday rehearsals may risk being removed from song/dance numbers or the musical. Leads must prioritize Sunday rehearsals; missing 2 is not advisable, and casting considerations are based on the conflict calendars submitted during auditions.

Sunday, March 3, and March 10 are mandatory for all cast and crew.
Hours vary by part.
If you know at the time of auditions about a conflict on this day, please put it on your audition form so we can address it together to see where to best place you in the show.
ALL rehearsals during tech and dress rehearsal week are mandatory: March 12, 13, 14, and 15.
March 14 & 15 are dress rehearsal days during school conference hours.
March 14 will end at 6:30ish p.m. March 24 will end at 4:30ish p.m.
The week of the show, rehearsals are slightly longer. Snacks & breaks are provided.
There are NO Sunday rehearsals over MLK weekend or Presidents’ Day weekend.
It is imperative to the show's success and as a team player that you attend the rehearsals for which you are called. If you miss a rehearsal, it is up to you to learn any missed blocking/choreography and meet with the stage manager to get blocking notes.
WILL I HAVE TO BE AT EVERY REHEARSAL?
No. Except for the all-cast read-through and the final week of rehearsals, not every cast member will have to attend every rehearsal. A complete rehearsal schedule will be released after the show is cast so that we can consider student schedules and conflicts listed on the audition information forms.
SO, COULD I PLAY BASKETBALL OR HAVE OTHER ACTIVITIES AND STILL BE IN THE SHOW?
YES! Basketball is finished before the majority of production goes into full swing. There is no conflict between basketball and the musical, but learning to prioritize and select your activities wisely is important. No one can do everything and expect to do everything well. Please carefully think about your level of commitment and your homework load. Please know that if you have several other competing activities, it is unreasonable to expect yourself to be cast in a leading role and unfair to the rest of the cast, who have made it their priority, as well as to the members/coaches of your other activities.
WHAT ABOUT SPRING SPORTS?
YES! YOU CAN DO SPRING SPORTS & the musical. Please note that students wishing to participate in both spring athletics and the annual school musical play production may try out for the sport but will not be permitted or expected to attend sports practices or games on days that conflict with play practices. Only after the student’s play commitment is complete (following all performances) may the student resume their full participation in sports activities. The crew reports to the musical on Sundays and the week before the show opening. Please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for further information on this policy. You MUST speak with Mr. Frank if you want to do both.
WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO BE ON STAGE BUT WOULD LIKE TO BE INVOLVED IN THE SHOW?
That's wonderful, and we have plenty for you to do. We will need stage managers, dance captains, song leaders, and crew members to run sets and spotlights, to work on props crew, work on costumes, organize storage, run the curtain, and more! The crew is required to attend the final Sunday rehearsal, tech week, and all shows.
DO I HAVE TO AUDITION TO WORK ON THE CREW OR SING OR DANCE IN THE ENSEMBLE?
